On 9/11/08, JS reporter Terry Bibo reported that PPD board members, "unanimously approved $63,915 for River City Construction to haul away excess dirt fill for the new Africa! exhibit at the Peoria Zoo --and they weren't too happy about it."
"It's hurting both us and the contractor," Superintendent of Planning Rebecca Fredrickson said. "Nobody's winning on this. It is not a good deal. But we have to do it."
She said there were flaws in the design, which originally called for the dirt to be used elsewhere in the project. The cost will be covered by a construction contingency fund set up by the Peoria Zoological Society which already approved the change at it's last meeting.
I asked reporter Bibo where the dirt went, landfill, sold, etc. She said she didn't know. I asked a park board member and he said he was not aware of the situation.
$63,000 dollars would indicate about 100 tandem 14 ton truckloads. Dirt sells for about $12 dollars a ton.
Nobody's winning? Interesting.
