Peoria County Board Chairman to Seek Third Term

Democrat Tom O'Neill, County Board peer elected Chairman told me today that he will seek a third term in November. Prior to Dave Williams, former Democrat County Board Chairman being elected to a third term in 2004, it was generally understood that the County Board Chairman would step down after two terms so someone else could run for the position.

The new chair will receive $25,000 a year, up from $16,000 a year, as recently voted by the full County Board. The current chair is employed by the City of Peoria and will be eligible for 2 pensions and perhaps 3 if he retires at 55.

Democrat Mike Phelan, one of 5 who voted against a third 2 year term for Williams, has long felt confident that he would make a good chairman. I agree but Phelan has not as yet been able to garner the 10 votes that would elect him.

Meanwhile, the somewhat divided Republicans, will probably remain a minority in the upcoming election
